John Gourlay lives in the imposing “house with green shutters,” a symbol of his success that is deeply resented by the residents of his village. This realistic novel portrays a gossipy, bleak town whose populace is blind to beauty and unaware that what lies behind the grand and orderly exterior of the house with the green shutters is chaos and, eventually, murder.
