In the small town of Panama, Pennsylvania, Miss Una Golden chooses smooth-talking widower-salesman Edward Schwirtz over the decent Walter Babson—avoiding the then-suspect necessity for her to find a job. This 1917 novel by Lewis takes on women’s rights, anti-Semitism, alcoholism, venereal disease, adoption, and women who drink and smoke.
