The romance and lawlessness of nineteenth-century Uruguay come alive in this exuberant, comic tale. Englishman Richard Lamb elopes with an Argentinean woman—making an enemy of her father. The rest of the story follows his attempt to seek his fortune in the country’s jungle interior, the dangerous situations he encounters, and the revenge his bride’s father eventually extracts.
